Dear Friends of CADP:

This past July, the U.S. Supreme Court exposed several death penalty laws for what they truly are: unconstitutional at best, arcane and inhumane at worst. As a result, Colorado laws were put under the microscope, and Coloradans Against the Death Penalty mobilized. A Special Session of the Colorado Legislature passed a law returning the sentencing phase of capital murder cases to a unanimous jury decision. At the same time, other bills regarding the death penalty were also being introduced; one calling for a moratorium, another for abolishing the death penalty and a third advocating a super majority jury decision.

In response to the Supreme Court decisions and the call for a Special Session of the Colorado Legislature, Coloradans Against the Death Penalty formed a coalition with other anti-death penalty organizations. Together the groups lobbied for the return to a unanimous jury decision, and for moratorium and abolition bills. Using the momentum of the Special Session and the Supreme Court rulings, CADP joined others in a press conference and in intensive lobbying efforts at the State Capitol urging legislators to use recent decisions and studies from around the nation to highlight repeated flaws in the entire death penalty system as a catalyst for rethinking and evaluating the system here in Colorado.

As a result of these and other efforts, new bills calling for abolition, a moratorium, and a super majority jury decision are expected to be reintroduced in the regular legislative session in January, 2003. CADP would like to ask for your financial assistance and support of our efforts to educate the public regarding the many inadequacies of the Colorado death penalty system, to lobby the anticipated bills, and to call for a statewide study of the death penalty.
