CADP 2002 Federal Legislation Alert

Coloradans Against the Death Penalty asks everyone to take immediate action on this important federal legislation.

Please contact your U.S. Senators and congressional representatives. Tell them you are a constituent, and urge them to support these two bills:

  • Innocence Protection Act of 2001
Official title: A bill to reduce the risk that innocent persons may be executed, and for other purposes. Sponsor: Sen Leahy, Patrick J. (introduced 3/7/2001). From the overview, "The Innocence Protection Act of 2001 is a carefully crafted package of criminal justice reforms aimed at reducing the risk that innocent persons may be executed. Most urgently, the bill would afford greater access to DNA testing by convicted offenders; and help States improve the quality of legal representation in capital cases." The Senate bill is S.486 and the related House bill is H.R.912. The Senate bill was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee in July 2002. Get more information.

  • National Death Penalty Moratorium Act of 2001
Official title: A bill to place a moratorium on executions by the Federal Government and urge the States to do the same, while a National Commission on the Death Penalty reviews the fairness of the imposition of the death penalty. Sponsor: Sen Feingold, Russell D. (introduced 1/31/2001). The Senate bill is S.233 and the related House bill is H.R.1038. Get more information (or send free fax).

Note: To date, only Colorado Representatives Diana DeGette and Mark Udall have signed on among the over 200 cosponsors of the Innocence Protection Act. No representatives or senators from Colorado have yet signed onto the National Death Penalty Moratorium Act.
