National Coalition Director to Speak at CADP Dinner

Steven Hawkins, Executive Director of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (NCADP), will be the keynote speaker at CADP's annual dinner on February 25.

The CADP dinner will also feature presentation of the Abolitionist of the Year Award to an incredible private investigator who has poured her soul into the several death penalty cases on which she has worked.

A special memorial award will honor the life and work of Public Defender Terri Brake, who died unexpectedly last year. Terri's spirited and brilliant defense of death cases was both inspirational and effective.

Keynote speaker Steve Hawkins is a long-time advocate for civil and human rights, having served as an assistant counsel with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund before joining the NCADP.

Mr. Hawkins has represented persons under death sentence in state, federal and military courts across the country, including well-known journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard, his law degree from NYU School of Law, and served as law clerk to the Honorable A. Leon Higginbotham of the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Mr. Hawkins has provided commentary on The Today Show, CNN, Court-TV, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and other major news programs.

He has lectured on the death penally both in the US and abroad and has received numerous honors for his advocacy on behalf of those under sentence of death.
