From the Editor

This second issue of the Coloradans Against the Death Penalty Newsletter has taken much longer to get to you than I had hoped. I have been very busy in the past several months with my work as a lawyer, and I am still not very fast at putting this together. Future issues should be easier to produce, with the assistance of Jennifer Radcliffe, who has volunteered to help.

After the first issue of the Newsletter was published, I was one of four speakers on a panel in Colorado Springs about the death penalty. The most compelling speaker that night was a man working for the Catholic Church whose sister in Maryland had been murdered. His experiences were similar to those of Bud Welch, whose daughter died in the Oklahoma City bombing. Mr. Welch talked in a number of Front Range cities in November 1999, and I was lucky enough to hear him in Colorado Springs. A report on his speech will be featured in a future issue of the newsletter, to focus on murder victims relatives who are opposed to the death penalty.

This issue contains more information about CADP, its Board of Directors, Advisory Counsel and committees, and some of our activities and projects. Please be sure to read the letter from Vicki Mandell-King, president of the CADP Board of Directors.

See the brief summary of arguments against capital punishment. This information is available as a one- page fact sheet available from CADP. These arguments will be analyzed individually and in more detail in future issues.

The Declaration of Life is repeated in this issue; there is new information about its source, as well as its longer version.

If you have comments about the Newsletter or would like to write an article for it, please call me at (719) 633-9011, send a fax to (719) 633-8873 or send e-mail to kchaney@rmi.net.
